In Summary

Cherotich, 21, posted a new championship record of 8.51.59 to collect Kenya's fourth gold medal at the current games.

Faith Cherotich banished pre race favourite Winfred Yavi to win the women's 3,000 metre steeplechase gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Wednesday 17 September 2025.

Cherotich, 21, posted a new championship record of 8.51.59 to collect Kenya's fourth gold medal at the current games. All of Kenya's medals have been won by women. Beatrice Chebet in the 10,000 metres, Faith Kipyegon in the 1500, Peres Jepchirchir in the Marathon and now Cherotich.

Yavi, a Kenyan by birth who now races for Bahrain, came second with a time of 8.56.46. Sembo Almayew from Ethiopia came in third with a time of 8.58.86. Kenya's Doris Lemngole managed fifth in the race.

Yavi looked strong towards the final stages of the race but Cherotich bested her in the final water jump to collect a much needed win.
